Expectations/Rules:

  • What to Expect: You've undoubtedly seen my gallery and my style of work.  There are things I'm good at and things I am still working on.  So chances are if you want me to draw a cool superhero girl/woman, I'm your guy.  If you want me to draw your alien creature that has the body of a man and squid, I don't think you'll get the quality you're looking for.  If your commission falls within my wheelhouse, you'll probably end up getting a better quality product (though I'll do my best to accomodate you).
  • No adult work: I don't do adult style work.  No nudes, sex, hentai, tentacle monster etc.  I have drawn the nude female form before but I'm more of your traditional comic book style guy.  I'd be uncomfortable drawing your commission and it wouldn't be the quality you're looking for.  Sexy, suggestive, pin up style (clothed) I can certainly do.  Just check out my gallery. Bikini shots and all that are perfectly fine.
  • Resolution and Size: I work at 300dpi, on a comicbook proportionate size canvas (digitally).  I can do 8.5x11 if you'd like, but I basically add a bit more so it looks proportionately like a comic book page size.  Exact size is 8.5x13.137 inches.  This shrinks nicely for real comic book size covers or you can keep it big and print it on an 11x17 sheet with a nice border.
  • Digital Files Only: I don't print the commission for you, I will send you the digital work that I've done and or a print safe file that you can print from as you wish.  It is my intent that I will show this work on my deviant art profile and mention you as the commissioner.  Should you want to include it in your own gallery, you would need to give me proper credit as the artist.
  • Time line: I want you to feel excited about your commission and that you will get it in a timely manner.  That said, I am doing this to help with my wedding.  My regular day job will go on, as well as wedding planning and social obligations.  So I will get your commission done with the care and time it deserves but be aware it could take me a while.
  • Contracting/No Refunds: You are contracting me to do a digital drawing for you.  You are asking my interpretation on content you are providing.  If you don't like my interpretation their are no refunds.  The commission was for my interpretation and if you've reviewed my gallery you can have a fair expectation of what you will get.  I don't want to sound rude but this is to protect me.  If you literally ask me to draw a stick figure, and I draw you a stick figure but you don't like it, I'm sorry, you asked for a stick figure and that's what I gave you.
  • Payment: I've been in the creative business for a long time now.  I've learned through non-art related projects that you get paid first.  So unfortunately I will have to ask for payment upfront.  Once I receive your payment I will begin work on your commission.

Whew, ok, I hope I didn't sound like an ass there.  Its just important to set expectations for you and for me.  Protects us both from disappointment.  Lets talk about what I can offer:

Packages:

  1. Supergirl's Day Off by Spacecowboytv $150 one character: One character. Fully colored. Digitally Inked. Minimal background.
  2. Kclcmdr Commission (Supergirl) by Spacecowboytv $100 one character (cell shaded): One character. Cell colored. Digitally Inked. Minimal background.
  3. INKS EXAMPLE by Spacecowboytv $50 one character (Inks, no Color): One character. Digitally Inked. No background.

To Get a Commission, please send me a note on deviant art with:

  • Your Full Name
  • Your active e-mail address (which I will use for further contact if you get a slot)
  • What you would like to have me draw
  • What package you would like to have

I will get back to you as soon as I can confirming that you have a slot and send you further information, or letting you know that I am already full up.

Ok, well I think that's it.  Let me know if you'd like a commission!  Thanks everyone!

It finally happened!

I have 2,000 watchers on Deviant Art.  I have seen several other deviant art members celebrate the same goal so I wanted to as well.  About a month ago I noticed I was about 10 watchers away and in two weeks I was up to 1998.  But, as users' tastes change and or deactivate their accounts, I lost some watchers and was back to 1995.  But this morning I checked and was at 1999 and just seconds ago Pacer13 became my 2,000 watcher!  I am very excited!

Other than that, not much to update on.  I am working on a fun piece that I probably will finish in a week or so but I don't want to tease it yet.  Just keep your eyes peeled.

I am also still considering taking on commissions.  If you are interested read this Journal Entry: Commissions.

Good Day Deviant Art Community!

I am getting married.  August 1st 2015 at Hatley Castle in Victoria Canada.  If that location sounds familiar to you diehard comic book fans its because it is famous!  This is the filming location for Lex Luthor's mansion in my favorite TV show Smallville, as well as the infamous Xavier's School for the Gifted in all of the X-Men movies.  I am arguably the world's biggest Superman (DC Comics) fan and my Fiancee is an all Marvel girl so this one location is perfect for us.  It's literally one of the few places where DC and Marvel overlap, perfect for the start of our marriage.

So ... To help raise money for my wedding (one year away) I am going to open for commissions.  I've only done this one other time and it was almost 5 years ago.  So let me lay out the rates, the rules, and the expectations.

WHAT!

DA, are you kidding me?  lol I am so surprised!  Technically the vote is still going and at the time of this post Christopher Reeves is winning but WOW, Tim Daly?!  Let me first say, I'm not upset.  I like Tim Daly a lot actually.  I'm a fan of wings, and I think he is the perfect Superman voice.  That said I just didn't think he would go so high and at one point beat Christopher Reeves.  WOW!  Do you think that Tim Daly's voice as Superman is as quintessential as Kevin Conroy's voice is to Batman?  Just some food for thought.  Also, while I am a huge fan of Smallville, I didn't think that Tom Welling would do good.  But what was more surprising is that Dean Cain is beating out Henry Cavill right now.  Henry is Superman for the 21st century.  I mean WOW, that man is dedicated!  I wish he were higher up.  On the other side of things, not-surprisingly, our good boy Brandon Routh wasn't voted for.  I appreciate what he did for Superman Returns and I like his likeness to Christopher Reeves but I think that was his downfall, he needs to be his own Superman, not a reflection of the greatest Superman.

So I am blown away with the results of this poll.  It has to easily be my favorite I've ever done.  That said I will leave you with treats:

By the way I met Nathon Fillion at a Bar in Kirkland Washington once and he is the coolest nicest guy ever!  Pure Gentleman

Hello Folks!

Upon reviewing some of my older journals and submissions I saw a theme that I still believe today.  Draw for the job you want!  Well that is exactly what I did in my latest piece.
Supergirl's New 52 Uniform 2.0 by Spacecowboytv
I am thinking about getting back to drawing my own story and before I did, I wanted to test out some quality issues.  This piece is a two page spread on Supergirl (my favorite character).  I'll let you read what its all about on the piece.  It would be a dream come true if I could somehow effect the life of Superman or Supergirl.  Just drawing a cover to a comic would be stupendous.  But, like I requested in the piece, I'm looking to get going on my own story and I'm going to use many if not all the techniques you see here to make my own comic.  If the quality is good in the piece above then I think its time to get started.  If you haven't seen it already and have some time, I would really appreciate answers to the 7 questions I've asked in the piece.  Just take a look and comment.

Thanks everyone!

Hey everyone!

Big thank you to all of you that reported and messaged the guy who stole my art.  While I can't say that he has been removed from DA, many of the pieces that he claimed were his that weren't have been removed.  So looks like progress is being made.  Thank you all again!

It pains me to have to put up another one of these posts.  A random new Deviant Art user has stolen one of my Supergirl drawings and claimed it as their own.  I want to give a special thanks to JacobBarnes for pointing out the theft.  The piece in question is this one from my gallery.

Good evening and good weekend to you Deviant Art,

For your consideration; a rare Friday evening journal entry.  (this must be a sign I'm getting old because its a Friday night and I'm staying in).  I was perusing my watched deviations when I noticed that some people have little icons next to their names.  Have you seen these?  I guess it denotes if you have a premium membership, or if you are a beta tester or lifetime member.  I also noticed that they have a category for "Senior Members".  This sounds pretty cool to me!  I don't know what you get with a senior membership but it certainly has some prestige with it.  Deviant Art says there aren't specific requirements to become a senior member but some loose guidelines can be found below:

"So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognize their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.  Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endeavor, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many others who deviate to be recognized in the crowd."

These criteria make sense to me.  I like that Deviant Art has this new category in its rank.  I'm not too humble to admit that I would love to be a senior member myself.  I have been an active member of the DA community for over 8 years and a premium member since the option was first offered.  That said, the people I have seen that are Senior Members are AMAZING.  I could never hope to catch up to their talents.

Any way, "I say good on you" to Deviant Art for offering this.  I think its a great incentive to continue to try and be a supportive member of the DA community.

~Spacecowboytv

PS:  I'm curious, is a Senior Membership something you "reader" would be interested in obtaining?

Edit:

I did it:

Hi everyone!

Happy Friday!  I am thinking of doing a redraw piece.  Basically I am going to look through my current gallery and find an old drawing that I thought I did good and re-do it as I would today.  I'm excited to see if I've improved much.  Some of the pieces I'm looking at redoing are 7+ years old so there could be a lot of difference between the two.  Have any of you done a redraw piece before?  If so, how'd it go.  What are the rules to stick to when redrawing a piece?

Here is what my rules are:
  1. Pose should be as similar as possible
  2. Character must be the same
  3. Outfit should be the same (if its Supergirl in a blue skirt, then don't put her in her new 52 outfit.  Keep it the same)
  4. The lines of the outfit can changed (new lines are essential for redrawing so try and account for wind, lighting, changes, whatever)
  5. Content should be the same but upgraded as best you can.  Add more details to cities if you did cities, add more detail to costumes ect.  Do the same drawing but better
  6. Have fun

Anyone else want to do a redraw piece too?  If so message me and we can share how it goes!

Greetings Deviant Art Community!

Today I have a serious topic I'd like to discuss.  Drawing the female form, naked.  I think for many of my watchers, you all will note that I have only one nude illustration in my gallery and that is completely out of my normal style.  It was something that I did while I was just out of college and was still learning the female form.  That aside, I never draw nudes.  My reasoning for this I think is pretty simple.  I am an aspiring comic artist/hobbyist.  I try to emulate the medium I wish to work in as closely as possible while bringing my own flair to the work.  While any good comic book illustrator, I'm sure, can do amazing nude illustrations, it isn't what the medium demands.

All that said, when I draw my pieces, I usually start with the form of the figure.  Basically all my drawings start out nude and I clothe them as the piece is continued.  This was a way that I was taught to draw in college and I think many other artists will agree that is how they do it too.  I'm not saying I draw the whole figure naked every time genitals and all but I will draw, for example, each breast before I have to hide certain defining lines of each breast to show there is a shirt on.  It helps me position where the shirt will lay on the figure.

I guess my conundrum today is that I have a piece I am working on that I enjoyed the form so much, I didn't clothe her.  I felt that the lines I did were pretty cool with how a real figure would be.  I just didn't want to put a suit or outfit or whatever on her.

So now I feel like a hypocrite.  I don't like it when someone draws a naked figure, calls it Rogue from X-Men, and gets an additional 100 likes simply because they said it was Rogue.  On the other hand, I think that this is the danger of this piece I am working on.  Full disclosure, I am working on a Supergirl piece in the nude.  I never do this and its only because I was so happy with how the form came out that I am even considering finishing this piece.  Basically, I don't want to fall into a different category of artist than I am comfortable with.  I know a lot of my work is a sexualized portrayal of females, but never outright nude.  I hope I walk a good line of keeping things tasteful.

I talked to my fiancee about this and she encouraged me to finish this piece.  She, a fellow artist and designer like myself, said that this is tastefully done and that I wasn't doing anything wrong.  Especially considering some of the other works she's seen on Deviant Art.  She thinks that its good for me to learn and sharpen my understanding of the form.  I am constantly trying to improve my work and perhaps a journey into the female form would serve me well.

So my questions for you, Deviant Art Community:
  1. If I were to finish this piece and upload it to the community, would that change your opinion of me?
  2. Am I a hypocrite to preach drawing for the job you want, then to do a piece like this?
  3. Is it appropriate, for this community, for this medium, for my audience?
  4. Have you had a situation like this before?  What were your lessons learned?

I would really appreciate your thoughts on this.  I am torn still on the matter.  I have no doubt that I will finish what I started due to the love and support of my fiancee, but posting it here, is still up in the air.  Let me hear your thoughts.

Thank you all!  Your opinions mean a lot,

~Spacecowboytv

Ho-ray! I think we had a Lovely turnout for the coloring contest. I really appreciate everyone entering the contest. It meant a lot to me to have so many of you collaborate on a piece of mine. I got so many good ideas on how to color Elizabeth from your work. If you haven't seen it already, here is how I ended up coloring Elizabeth:

Now for the winners! I have done coloring contests before, but this was the first time I turned to the DA community to do the judging.  I really enjoyed the results but I'd enjoy hearing your thoughts on the contest.  Did you feel that the contest was fair?  Did you think the results were good?  I hope everyone feels it was fair and well received. So without further ado,

Greetings Deviant Art,

It's taken me eight long years, 263 deviations (pieces), 2,379 comments, and 1774 watchers to get to this point!  I am incredibly honored and humbled by all the positive feedback, critiques and friendships I've gained from this community.  When I first joined, I was all about the numbers.  8 years ago, there weren't many people that had over 100,000 pages views (except maybe Artgerm at over a million).  Because of that, 100,000 pages views kind of became the gold standard in my head.  In the early days, I would try and pump out as much art as I possibly could to get my numbers up.  I was making pretty mediocre pieces all for that next jump in page views.  I think I've grown up though.  All of your comments, critiques, and even your flame messages have made me want to put out quality over quantity.  Once that lesson went to heart, I hope I've put out nothing but quality work to the best of my abilities.  So now, after going with quality work, I am on the border of 100,000 pageviews.  It may of taken longer to get here, but I am here on my terms which makes the victory all the more exciting.

I want to celebrate and encourage you to join me.  Much like many other deviant artists have done in the past, I would like to offer a prize to anyone that can get me a screenshot of the 100,000th page view.  I know that may not be possible but here are the rules.  The person that gets me the screenshot closest to 100,000 pageviews will get a years worth of premium membership on me.  If its exactly 100,000 I will announce the winner immediately.  If its really close, I will make a call for final submissions and if no one else is any closer to 100,000 pageviews I will declare the winner.

Winner: :iconfoolish-me-1232:
Runner-Up: :iconburbankorbust:

100,000 page views is like my personal pinnacle of Deviant Art stardom and I'm so excited to share it with you all.  Good luck in the contest and I look forward to your submissions and the big 100,000!

On another note:

I'm looking for more growth as an artist.  There is only so much self reflection and analysis one can do before you need outside influence.  To that end, I am desperate for more comments.  Some of you literally comment on every piece I do and I am so incredibly thankful for that.  You have made it possible for me to get to where I am today.  That said, I am a glutton for feedback and I would love so much more of you to give me your opinions on how I can improve.

So I've been thinking about how I can encourage this.  First of all I try and comment back on every comment I get.  I want you to know that what you say to me is read and taken to heart.  Beyond that, I have this idea.  Perhaps we could make a group on DA.  A comment and feedback group that is designed for more enriched discussion about our work.  Membership in this group will be tightly controlled as being a member of this group would require you to make a comment or critique on every piece that is submitted to the group.  (as the group grows we might change those rules to every other piece or something but in the beginning is should be every piece).  If you miss a comment or critique there could be a removal from the group or a warning or something.  I dunno the rules yet.  Of course, none of this will work unless folks are on board with this idea.

So what do you guys think?  Would it be worth while for use to create a super comments and critique club?  If so, would you join it?  Would you want to be a moderator?  What questions or concerns do you have about a group like this?  Let you know what you're thinking and maybe we can make something like that happen!

Thanks so much everyone!

Good Morning (/Afternoon) Deviant Art!

From my last Journal, you may know I did a speedpaint tutorial video for a few classes I was teaching in Hawaii.  I was very happy with the result and the kids in the class seemed to really enjoy it.  Alternatively, I really enjoyed doing the video part as well.  I liked adding music and titles, transitions to the video once I had it compressed into 6 or so minutes.  So to further my understanding of video editing I decided to do another one.  Because this one wasn't going to be used for a training video for students, I went a little more "racy" with it.  Basically, bottom boob!  Any way, the video is up and I would truly love any comments that you could give.  Whether its here or on youtube doesn't matter but I am dying to know what you think.  I really appreciate your comments.

Hey Folks,

Thanks for filling out my survey on why you watch me, much appreciated!  I wanted to take a moment and talk about a small hobby of mine.  As many of you know, I am a huge Supergirl/Superman fan.  I really love drawing Supergirl and I am constantly trying to get better at doing so.  In my quest, I've gathered quite a large collection of Supergirl reference images.  I've started sorting them into the best illustrations ever (in my opinion) and I'm throwing them up on a Pinterest board.  If you'd like to see what I've got so far check it out here: The Best Supergirl Illustration Board.  This board has a high level of scrutiny but I'm also noticing that I'm throwing up a lot of pieces.  If you have a drawing of your own or would like to submit a friend's drawing or just your favorite Supergirl illustration please message me, or email me from the pintrest board.  I would love to include more work.  Also if you like the board, pass it around to your friends.  I want this board to be THE spot for the best Supergirl Illustrations ever, including professional work and fan art.

Supergirl Speed Paint Video

Mon Mar 4, 2013, 8:05 AM
Good Morning Deviant Art.

In the next few days I am going to be flying out to Hawaii for some family stuff.  While there I was asked to give a few presentations on comic books and production processes.  I've been preparing my presentation over the last few weeks and in doing so, I was able to make a speed paint video.  My audience for this presentation is high school students and I wanted to show them all that goes into making a cover for a comic.  I recorded my screen every step of the way while I painted a faux Supergirl cover.  I ended up with 18 hours of footage.  Because I don't think the school will give me 18 hours for my presentation, I compressed the footage down to 7 minutes.  This was the first time I've done a speed paint video.  I was nervous and you can see where I go back and edit some pieces in the video.  All in all though, I am very happy with how it turned out.  I would love to share this video with you guys and if I could, please please please, comment and or favorite on you tube.  It would mean a lot to me.  So if I can figure out the requirements for placing a video in a journal, here's the video:

hmmmm . . . doesn't look like I can embed the video into this journal entry.  Please visit the video on You Tube (click below):

Powergirl from CallMePo: Process

Mon Feb 4, 2013, 1:40 PM
Hey all,

Here is my process from my most recent Powergirl piece (Originally drawn by :iconcallmepo:.

"My father believed, that if the world found out who I really was, they'd reject me.  He was convinced that the world wasn't ready, what do you think?"

I can't believe this trailer, its amazing!  I took the time to screen cap each scene break from it and every picture is a piece of art all to its own.  I know I am bias because I love Superman so much but I think even the average person has to admit this is a beautiful trailer.  I am super excited!  I bought tickets to the 12am showing of Hobbit so I could see this trailer, ugh I wouldn't have if I knew it was going to come out early.  Oh well, still awesome.
